The adoption of newer technologies is driving the sector's rapid expansion.

The bone biopsy devices market is undergoing significant growth and is being fueled by various advancements, such as automatic biopsy drivers. Notably, the BD Trek bone biopsy kit—approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last year—has experienced a 139% U.S. sales increase, with the number of healthcare facilities adopting these devices tripling, according to GlobalData. Bone biopsy devices are used to extract tissue samples from bone or vertebral bodies for diagnostic purposes. The adoption of newer technologies in the bone biopsy devices market, such as automatic biopsy drivers, is driving market growth. These innovations, including vacuum-assisted and ultrasound-guided options, are enhancing diagnostic capabilities, and contributing to improved patient care. “Bone biopsy devices are designed to facilitate the removal of small bone samples for examination, aiding in the early detection and diagnosis of diseases like cancer,” GlobalData Principal Medical Devices Analyst Tina Deng, MSc, said. “The BD Trek single-use core needles gain popularity because they improve the accuracy and reliability of bone biopsies. Their power driver provides variable speeds with a LED indicator to allow precise control for different needs. Additionally, the high average selling price than conventional needles also contributes to the robust revenue increase.” Other improvements in the bone biopsy market include vacuum-assisted biopsy devices and ultrasound-guided bone marrow biopsy devices. U.S.-based OmniBone received FDA 510(k) clearance in June 2023 for its bone biopsy kit with power driver, designed for bone biopsy using cutting or aspiration techniques. Additionally, companies like BiBBInstruments aim to offer endoscopic ultrasound-guided core needle biopsies as an alternative to fine needle aspiration and fine needle biopsy techniques. “As technology continues to advance, bone biopsy devices are expected to play an increasingly important role to improve the diagnosis and treatment of various conditions, including cancer, orthopedic disorders, and other bone-related diseases,” Deng noted.
